Third, access: content served in raw, crawlable HTML that AI crawlers can actually fetch — most of them execute no JavaScript.

Where did the term GEO come from?

GEO was coined in an academic paper, not a marketing deck. It introduced both the term and a benchmark for measuring visibility inside AI-generated answers.

The paper's headline number: adding relevant citations, quotations, and statistics to content improved its visibility in generative-engine responses by up to 40% on the benchmark. Two limits matter as much as the number. The result comes from controlled benchmark runs, not from live traffic on production websites, and "visibility" there means prominence inside generated answers — not clicks, and not revenue.

We treat the Princeton result as the strongest published evidence that content changes can move AI-answer visibility at all. We do not treat it as a prediction of what any specific site will experience, and neither should anyone selling you GEO services.

That last row is the one the industry most wants you to forget. Google's May 2025 guidance describes what makes content eligible and useful for its AI experiences; it promises nothing, because the system is not controllable from the outside. Neither is ChatGPT, and neither is Perplexity.

What is GEO not?

GEO is not a trick, a hack, or a separate discipline you buy alongside SEO. The tactics with real evidence — direct answers, standalone passages, cited claims, crawlable HTML — are the same things good technical and content SEO has recommended for years, aimed at a new surface. If a pitch leans on secret tactics or proprietary scores, that is a red flag, not an edge.

Start with the four moves that have evidence behind them, in this order:

  2. Check what crawlers actually see. Fetch your page with an AI crawler's user agent and confirm the answer text is in the raw HTML response.
